Lead Teacher Job Description

Child care involves more than just babysitting services. Brightside Academy provides child care and early education that prepares children to be life-long learners. Our program combines state-of-the-art facilities, a nationally recognized curriculum and learning quality credentials that work together to help each child achieve kindergarten readiness.

As a professional individual, the classroom Lead Teacher works closely with the Academy Education Manager/Managing Lead Teacher to provide and maintain a positive and appropriate educational program that meets the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of the children within their care.

Essential Duties: Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

I.    Program Quality 
  • Provides high quality programming and care within their assigned age group/classroom(s).
  • Maintains constant supervision of classroom children at all times. The Lead Teacher is responsible for the health, welfare, and safety of the children.
  • Interacts with the children and encourages their involvement in classroom experiences.
  • Provides and maintains a safe, caring, and welcoming classroom that is kept orderly, clean, and appealing.
  • Works in conjunction with the Academy Education Manager and Managing Lead Teacher to ensure adequate classroom supplies, equipment, and resources are available.
  • Assists the Academy Education Manager with the Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS) for their assigned age group/classrooms to ensure the obtainment and maintenance of the highest quality credentialing.
  • Understands and is mindful of how personal appearances, dress, use of body language and tone of voice impact the environment, and how staff, children and families engage.
II.    Process
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates the educational environment and programming of their assigned age group/classroom(s). This includes but is not limited to:
    • Maintaining child attendance and educational records/files.
    • Becoming familiar with and utilizing the company-standardized curriculum and curricular resources in order to prepare, implement, and evaluate daily classroom experiences (indoor/outdoor).
    • Completing classroom planning documents on a weekly basis.  Weekly Planning Forms are to be completed at least one-week prior to implementation for review and posting purposes.
    • Preparing the environment and materials in accordance with Weekly Planning Forms.
    • Implementing age-, developmentally-, and culturally-appropriate classroom activities and experiences for the children.
    • Completing formal and informal child and classroom assessments and progress reports, per required timeframes.
    • Providing individualized programming and differentiated instruction necessary for the success of the children within their care.
    • Providing a family-friendly and focused environment that includes frequent informal communication with caregivers as well as formal tri-yearly conferencing. Additional conferences should be made available upon request.
  • Actively participates in and maintains their classroom “Response to Intervention" process. The Brightside Academy “Response to Intervention" process works to ensure successful outcomes for all children and families who experience our programs. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Maintaining all classroom Response to Intervention documentation and reports.
    • Respecting and following the established Response to Intervention process, including child referral, intervention planning and implementation, child and classroom assessment, and parent communication. 
    • Establishing a classroom-based, age-, developmentally-, and culturally-appropriate positive behavioral support system.
    • Being sensitive to individual children’s differences and needs, and being willing to adjust the program, curriculum, and/or environment to meet those needs.
  • Actively participates in Brightside Academy as well as field-based professional development opportunities. It is required for classroom Lead Teachers to obtain a minimum of 24-professional development hours (or 8 college credits) a year.
  • Prepares the Assistant Teacher to assume the role of Lead Teacher by providing training while the Assistant Teacher leads selected activities during designated parts of the classroom day.
III.    Team 
  • Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
  • Actively attends and participates in all Academy staff meetings, and assists where needed. 
  • Motivates classroom colleagues by maintaining a positive attitude and leading by example.
  • Is willing to work in a team environment; is willing to share ideas and be open to other’s; is flexible and willing to compromise.
  • Assists in the creation of a positive enjoyable work environment.
The classroom Lead Teacher is expected to be on time to work every day and to follow the company dress-code. Lead Teachers always use appropriate language and treat everyone with respect, exhibiting a genuine positive attitude towards all children, families, and Academy colleagues. If anything is felt to be incorrect or inappropriate within the Academy, it is the responsibility of the Lead Teacher to immediately notify a member of the management team so issues can be addressed and rectified. This includes concerns with staff, families, and children.

The classroom Lead Teacher performs additional program duties as assigned by the Academy Director and/or the Academy Educational Manager and/or the Managing Lead Teacher.
All other duties as assigned.

Lead Teacher Job Requirements

The primary focus of the Lead Teacher is the provision of high quality programming within their assigned classroom. High quality classroom programming must include a triangulated framework of family-centered practices; developmentally, individually, and culturally appropriate practices and intentional teaching; and program support. The classroom Lead Teacher must be a professional committed to “best practices," always striving for excellence and successful child outcomes. They must be passionate about the field of early education and care; knowledgeable and articulate about recommended practices, particularly for their assigned age grouping; and able to support and mentor fellow educators in effort to promote similar traits and skills.  An effective classroom Lead Teacher must have the following education, experience, and abilities: 
  • Minimum of an Associates’ degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or related field (child development, special education, elementary education or human service field with 30 ECE credits).
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of documented positive early educational teaching experience, with preferably at least 1 year of experience in a Brightside Academy classroom.
  • Certified in First Aid, CPR, and Mandated Reporting.
  • Current and approved tuberculosis test results. (Test not required in OH)
  • Ability to pass a thorough criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Has working knowledge of state licensing and accreditation systems.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, including expressive (written and oral) as well as receptive skills.
  • Ability to use technology such as iPads, and other educational resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently as well as collaboratively make appropriate and rational judgments and decisions, reason effectively, and solve problems.
  • Ability to effectively read, write and communicate the English language. Bilingualism is a plus.
  • Has the physical capability to:
    • Frequently lift or move weight as in lifting, carrying or holding children up to 60lbs
    • Repetitively bend, stretch and stoop
    • Work with children on the floor
    • Work outdoors in a variety of weather
    • Fully maintain sight and sound child supervision
    • Perform light cleaning duties
Classroom Lead Teachers must be enthusiastic and energetic as well as nurturing, patient, compassionate. They should know how and when to encourage children and families at the same time when comfort, flexibility, and quick responsiveness is needed. They must be trustworthy, respect confidentiality, and be culturally aware and sensitive. Lastly, an effective classroom Lead Teacher must be a good “team player," and have the ability to work well with others.
